Strengthening offshore operational control with e-BO Offshare platform

At a glance:

  • Market : Offshore renewables | Transmission System Operators
  • Scope : Rising offshore project volume requires unified control of vessels, permits, resources and safety

The challenge

50Hertz operates the high-voltage transmission grid in northern and eastern Germany and plays a key role in Europe’s energy transition. As offshore wind capacity grows, the company is rapidly expanding its marine operations in the Baltic Sea. These activities include operating and maintaining existing offshore assets, as well as delivering complex new infrastructure projects such as cables and offshore substations with specialized vessels. As project volumes increased, 50Hertz faced growing operational complexity. Marine activities were previously coordinated separately per project, each with its own systems and processes. That approach became inefficient and risky. “In the past, each offshore project had its own marine coordination center. That didn’t scale. We needed one central system to stay in control,” says Mirko Köhlmann, Marine Offshore Coordination Engineer at 50Hertz.

The solution

To streamline offshore operations, 50Hertz established a single Marine Coordination Center (MCC) and selected Offshare, part of e-BO’s Offinity solution, as the central platform. Offshare orchestrates vessel movements, safety processes, workforce access, and offshore activities in one unified system. The platform creates a common operational picture with real-time oversight and full digital control.

Key components:

Vessel certification & marine work permits:

to ensure only approved vessels and certified personnel can operate offshore

Resource management

for tracking people and vessel logistics

Inventory

for marine and safety equipment

Learning Management System (FlowSparks integration)

for mandatory offshore safety inductions

Asset management capabilities

are available and could be activated as 50Hertz expands ownership of new offshore platforms

The implementation

Offshare was deployed as the central platform of the newly created Marine Coordination Center. A key reason 50Hertz chose e-BO Enterprises was platform flexibility:

  • e-BO customized Offshare to support German marine compliance workflows, including permit and documentation requirements.
  • e-BO developed custom transfer manifest generation to meet German customs requirements.
  • Offshare fits into 50Hertz’s IT landscape alongside SAP and integrates with FlowSparks for safety training.
  • The platform keeps evolving based on operational input from 50Hertz users.

“We wanted our own workflows reflected in the platform, not the other way around. The flexibility of Offshare has made this possible,” says Köhlmann. Another deciding factor was long-term collaboration: “e-BO was the only vendor willing to align with our IT roadmap.”

The results

Offshare delivers measurable operational impact for 50Hertz:

  • Centralized marine control: The MCC now manages offshore projects with a unified digital system, reducing operational risk and increasing visibility.
  • Strong safety compliance: Marine permits, crew certifications and safety inductions are handled digitally, creating full traceability and control.
  • Operational efficiency: Real-time vessel coordination and automated workflows reduce administration and accelerate marine approvals.
  • Prepared for future growth: The platform will scale as 50Hertz installs and operates more offshore assets in the future.
  • High service quality from e-BO: “Whenever we have an issue, we get fast replies and fast solutions. The collaboration works extremely well,” Köhlmann confirms.

Why e-BO Enterprises?

  • Deep offshore and mission-critical environment expertise
  • Highly flexible platform tailored to customer workflows
  • Long-term technology partner, not a software vendor
  • Proven service culture and fast response times
