Belgian wind farms capacity times three by 2030

By 2030, the wind farms in the Belgian North Sea should be producing three times more electricity than today. Currently, the capacity of our offshore wind farms in the first zone is 2.2 gigawatts (GW).

This first zone is full, which is why a plan for a second zone was approved two years ago. This will include larger and more powerful wind turbines and an energy island at sea with a capacity of 3.5 GW. The total capacity of wind energy at sea will thus increase to 5.8 GW. According to Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten (Green), tripling the capacity will ensure that every Belgian household will have electricity from the North Sea.

With a coastline of 67 kilometres, Belgium is cleverly placed fifth on the list of countries that produce the most wind energy at sea.
